How to Enjoy Japan’s Sake Culture.

Japan has its own unique customs and ways to enjoy drinking.
This page introduces these traditions and offers tips on how to fully experience Japan's drinking culture.

Types of Places to Drink in Japan

There are many different ways to enjoy drinking in Japan, and the type of place you choose can vary depending on the occasion.
Here's an introduction to the unique types of places in Japan where you can enjoy drinks.

Izakaya

The purposes for which this project collects and uses personal information are as follows:

Izakaya is a casual spot where you can enjoy drinks along with a variety of dishes. These places are ideal for having dinner while enjoying alcohol.
Some places are known for their excellent seafood, while others are famous for their delicious meat dishes.
There are a great place to experience traditional Japanese cuisine and sake all in one setting.

Japanese Pub (Snack Bar)

Japanese Pub is a place to enjoy drinks while engaging in conversation.

One key figure in these places is the “mama”—a hostess who not only serves drinks and talks with guests but also creates a welcoming atmosphere and manages.
The mama's personality shapes the vibe of each Japanese Pub, making each one unique and giving you a chance to explore a variety of styles.

Lounge

Lounge is similar to a Japanese Pub, but the key difference is whether the staff sit next to the guests or not.

Like Japanese Pub, lounges offer a relaxing setting to enjoy drinks and conversation.

What is HASHIGO ZAKE, the art of bar crawling through many different spots? What is HASHIGO ZAKE?

HASHIGO-ZAKE is a way to enjoy drinking by visiting multiple Izakayas and Japanese Pubs in one evening.
Since it's typically done on foot, it's difficult to do if there aren't enough shops.
Hagi City, with its abundance of tasty and fun spots within walking distance, is the perfect place to enjoy this traditional customs!

How to enjoy HASHIGO ZAKE

6:00 p.m.
It's dinner time, and you're feeling hungry. Let's start by enjoying a drink over a good meal.
Head to an Izakaya! Hagi City has plenty of excellent dining options to choose from.
The key here is not to eat too much.
The night is just getting started!
7:30 p.m.
Let's head to the next Izakaya.
Since the first place was seafood, I'll have meat at the second spot.
In Hagi, it's easy to switch things up like this, thanks to the variety of quality spots around town.
9:30 p.m.
After hitting the second spot, I'm feeling full and in a great mood.
Now I'm in the mood to chat with someone.
That's where a “Japanese Pub” comes in to fill that need.
Japanese Pubs typically open around 9 PM, so it's just the right time.
Now, for the third stop, let's enjoy some conversation at a Japanese Pub.
10:30 p.m.
At the third Japanese Pub, I had the chance to connect with the locals of Hagi.
At places like these, it's easy to strike up chats with other customers as well.
In Japan, lively chats is a key part of the drinking experience!
Why not take the fun a step further with one last stop?
Let's head to a Lounge for our fourth visit.
12:00 a.m.
At the Lounge, the chats with the staff flows easily, leaving me feeling happy and completely satisfied.
It's the perfect time.
What a wonderful night in Japan it's been.
